If you want to protect your car from bad weather, but a garage is too expensive for your budget, you should consider building a simple wooden carport. From our own experience a simple carport can be build by any person that knows how to work with basic power tools and chooses the right plans.

There is a large variety of plans to choose from, so you should write down a list with your requirements, before selecting the actual instructions. In addition, we recommend you to study attentively the local building codes, as the legal requirements are strict and you have to comply with them.

After understanding these constraints, you should decide what type of carport will fit your needs, tastes and budget. Therefore, if you have a narrow backyard or you want to have a quick access to your house, an attached carport will satisfy your needs. In addition, a carport attached to an existing building will keep the expenditures under control and you will make use of your land efficiently.

On the other hand, if you want to build a large carport, even for two cars, or you just want to make it a focus point of your garden, building a free-standing constructions would be a great idea. Next, you should decide if to build a lean to carport or a construction with a gable roof. Moreover, you could let the sides of th building open or you could add lattice panels, to protect your car from bad weather.

Building a carport is a straight forward job, as you just need to set several 4x4 posts into concrete, attach the 2x6 rafters, cover the roof with plywood sheets and install the asphalt shingles. Make sure you lay out the carport properly, using batter boards and string. Plumb the wooden posts with a spirit level and secure them temporarily with 2x4 braces, till the concrete dries out.

Attach 2x6 support beam to both sides of the carport and lock them into place with carriage bolts. Fit the rafters between these components, after cutting their ends at the right angle.

As a general rule, the roof shoudl have a slope of at least 15 degrees, otherwise it won't drain the water properly. As you can easily see, anyone can get the job done, if you pay attention to several aspects. Buy quality lumber, such as pressure-treated, as it will resist to water damage and decay.
