Colorado Roofing Company Choosing A Manufacturer

By Lance Peters on November 15, 2010

Whether your roof replacement is associated with storm damage repair or some simply a matter of a worn out old roof, you need to do your homework before there is any roof work. First, you need to check the local building codes to see if there are any special requirements regarding roof repair and replacement. Then you need to have your roof inspected to see exactly what needs to be done. Sometimes what appears to be a minor problem could be a major one, or vice versa. Have a reputable professional take a look.

If your roof just needs to be repaired, you still need to have a professional to make the repairs with the best materials you can afford. If the condition is such that you need a new roof, then you may wish to change the roofing material too. Still, every thing depends on your own tastes, your budget, where you live and local building codes.

If you live in Colorado, which you probably do if you're reading this, you will not opt for any plastic or rubber roofing materials which will not hold up under heavy rains and snow. Other options include asphalt (including fiberglass), tile, cement, wood, metal, slate, and a host of newly engineered substitutes.

There are also many manufacturers and installers of roofing materials, and many of them are equally good in the realm in which they operate. Of course, before you settle on any one manufacturer or contractor, educate yourself on what they are selling and what they are supposed to be qualified to do. Ask around for recommendations, and check for customer complaints on the internet.

GAF/Elk is a highly rated, best selling manufacturer of roofing materials. Most popular is their "complete roofing system" which consists of not only the shingles, but also leak barriers, roof deck protection, membrane roofing for low slopes, attic ventilation, starter strip shingles, and ridge cap shingles. Using a GAF certified installer allows the homeowner extra coverage in the form of a "Weather stopper System Plus warranty."

IKO carries a wide assortment of fiberglass shingles in varies styles and colors. Owens Corning, like GAF/Elk carries a line of "complete roofing system" materials in addition to many types and styles of laminated shingles, which can simulate many different roofing materials such as slate and wood shakes. Additionally, they carry a full line of three tab shingles and "mineral surfaced roll roofing"

CertainTeed, which seems to make everything, including vinyl siding and windows, also makes roofing materials. They carry a wide array of engineered shingles, many of which are guaranteed to last a lifetime. Of course they also carry more traditional (and less expensive) fiberglass shingles which are guaranteed for about thirty years. Most manufacturers can recommend a roofer in your area who is certified to install their product.

Of course, you may find your roofer first and they may recommend the manufacturers for which they are certified. Whichever is the case, make sure you're are working with qualified professionals
