How To Repair A Slate Roof?

By Tim Barone on July 08, 2012

The word "slate" conjures images of blackboards, old-fashioned slate signs, tourist-friendly slate caverns, and slate gifts. Few people think about the durability and effectiveness of slate as a roofing material. This unassuming stone is one of the most durable roof options available, however; some slate roofs have been around for centuries. The type of slate roof installation you have will determine the repair, and so too does the type of roof damage you're dealing with.

Damage due to rot, moss, mould, hail, or fire all requires different remedies. It's best to be prepared for any eventuality. That way when the time comes, you won't have to ask "what can I repair my roof with, " because you'll already know. The price for roof tile replacement changes over time. It also changes based on the material of the roof (right from inexpensive three-tab shingles to architectural slate or shingles), the roofer, the steepness (or pitch) of the roofing, the region to get covered up, and the host of some other aspects.

Simple maintenance is needed for this type of roofing. There is no cleaning for slate like for clay tiles, which are a burden to clean and maintain. Slate needs only periodic patch maintenance should a slab fall off or crack. Special tools are used to prevent further damaging the slate when repairing the slate roof installation.

Even with the amazing durability of a slate roof, it does, at times, need repair. Whether it's a branch that falls on your house, or a clumsy satellite dish installer, every now and then a slate will get damaged. This damaged slate needs to be repaired, otherwise the waterproofing that a slate roof repair can provide will be compromised. This is a flat surface that has a hook on the end that will seat the slates end piece holding it in place.

Once you get the hook in place you just put the slate back in and seat it to the hook. The hook will be slightly out further than the slate needs to be seated. Although you as a homeowner can perform this type of inspection yourself, it is recommended that you make an appointment with a certified roof repair specialist once every few years to have that company perform a more thorough inspection of your roof.

After you repair a slate roof repair, don't forget to remove any debris left in your gutters. This includes work tools, slate or anything left over from the winter months. As always, if you find yourself in a situation that you're unsure of how to deal with, it may be time to call a professional.

By doing this, you may end up saving yourself a bit of hassle and money in the long run. Make sure that you ask for references, a portfolio of previous work, and to see the proper licenses and permits before signing a roofing contractor.
