Home Remedies for Psoriasis

Try not to injure the skin, even with excessive rubbing, chafing or scratching. Don't allow the skin to become scratched by anything and even things like a tight watchband can make the psoriasis flare up in the affected area.

Zostrix cream is used to treat shingles and is an over the counter cream. It takes out the substance P from the body and takes down the itching and pain associated with the psoriatic lesions. You need to use it regularly and for at least three weeks for it to work on the psoriasis.

Obesity seems to worsen psoriasis so if you lose weight, your psoriasis will be better. You can have fewer skin folds for the psoriasis to build up in, especially if you have inverse psoriasis.
Let the stress go from your body. Keep a good attitude and really let all the stress go from your life. Psoriasis can greatly worsen from stress. You need to relax and not let stress get to you.

Add fish oil to your list of supplements and eat fish like tuna and salmon to increase the amount of omega 3 and omega 6 fish oils in your diet. It seems to decrease the thickness of the psoriatic plaques and reduces the itching and redness. You need to try and get fish oil capsules that have an EPA concentration of about 17 percent. Just eating fish won't do it as you'd have to eat 1-2 pounds of fish a day to even get 5 grams of EPA in your diet.

Make sure all infections are treated, as skin infections can trigger psoriasis. Even insect bites that get infected can trigger the disease and should be treated with OTC antibiotic creams such as bacitracin or Neosporin can help stave off infection and keep psoriasis at bay. Some children can get guttate psoriasis after having a strep throat infection. Use antibiotics as directed by your doctor and your chances of getting psoriasis are less.

Try buying a UVB sunlamp to shine light on the psoriatic lesions so that they can abate. UVB light is a bit better than the UVA light they have in sun tanning booths but both forms of light can make a difference.

Try OTC coal tar preparations on the lesions. Put the emollients containing coal tar on at night because it smells bad and stains clothing. Use old clothes when you sleep and then wash it off in the morning. It works really well for some people with psoriasis but it sensitizes you to the sun so be careful when using light treatments or going outside.

Baking soda. To remove the itchiness out of your scaly patches, blend 1 1/2 glasses baking soda into three gallons drinking water. Protect your itchy pads using a clean cloth drenched in the mixture.

Epsom salts. Include a little bit of these therapeutic salts in your bath tub. They will reduce the swelling and heal your psoriasis.
