Shingles (herpes zoster) is an infection that is left over from childhood chicken pox. After the chicken pox has run its course, the virus exits to the nerve endings near the brain and the spinal cord, where it lays dormant for many years until there is a weak moment within the system. Then it attacks again. A weak immune system seems to account for the disparity, if there has been chicken pox, the chance for contracting shingles is 40 percent. Adult chicken pox is very dangerous, and anyone who has not had the childhood kind should avoid anyone who has them. As many as one million people a year get shingles. For those over age fifty, postherpetic neuralgia (PUN) may become a problem. The blisters never really heal and there are sensation problems (itching, pain, and numbness) for months or even years. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as blisters and crust formations and severe pain along the involved nerve, which may last for several weeks.

There is deep pain where there is an attack, usually on one side involving the arm or leg and sometimes the face or eyes (see an ophthalmologist since shingles may cause blindness). Fever and fatigue often accompany the pam. Blisters filled with pus appear, usually on the abdomen under the ribs, but they may appear anywhere several days later. The B vitamins (25 milligrams daily) are necessary for the proper functioning of the nerves. Massive doses of vitamin C can boost the immune system and limit the infection of shingles.

Calcium and magnesium are important for the transmission of nerve impulses and protection of sensitive nerve endings. Vitamin E (up to 1, 600 IU daily) has been shown to relieve long-term symptoms. Vitamin E oil applied to the area is thought to help. Lysine (500 milligrams three or four times per day) may help if the post-viral neuralgia is already present. Adenosine, a nucleic acid derivative, may relieve symptoms of shingles. AL 721 interferes with the infectivity of the virus.

A well-balanced diet of vegetable protein or lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy products, and fruits and vegetables is recommended. Foods to fight the virus and keep the immune system at its optimum are essential. Vitamin C foods such as citrus fruits, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, fruits such as strawberries, brewer's yeast, brown rice, and whole grains are good. Chocolate, gelatin, nuts, and other foods high in arginine should be avoided.

Herbs and natural ingredients that may be beneficial are hot red peppers, parsley, wormwood, licorice, and Chinese gentian. Cornstarch and baking soda compresses or baths are soothing. Coolness numbs nerve endings in the skin and interferes with messages for pain and itch to the brain.
