Herpes - A Dreadful Disease

By Renu Nayal on November 09, 2010

Herpes is the reaction like painful blisters and sores. This disease is normally caused due to the viruses herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Herpes is categorized into two forms, oral herpes and genital herpes. Oral herpes basically causes cold sores around the mouth; genital herpes causes infection around the sexual organs. Chicken Pox and Shingles is also cause due to Herpes Zoster.

The person suffering from oral herpes has cold sores on the lips or the inner area of the mouth. These may last for a week or so and go away. However it may return in some weeks, months or years. These blisters are normally harmless but can turn harmful if caused in newly born children. People who have genital herpes have no symptoms or the symptoms are unnoticed. The symptoms of herpes have the cluster of blistery sores on the vagina, penis, buttocks, or anus. These may last for a week or so and go away. However it may return in some weeks, months or years. Genital herpes has symptoms like blisters

The person infected with herpes undergoes four stages. The primary stage, the latent stage, the shedding stage and the recurrence stage are the four stages of herpes. The primary stage basically shows in 2 to 8 days of the patient been infected. The blisters are small and painful that contains fluid which is either clear or cloudy and is normally red in color. One major reason behind not noticing the blisters is that the blisters break open so easily making an open sore that it normally goes unnoticeable. These blisters in the sexual areas may have pain during passing of urine and have fever and itching. The fever is normally overlooked as flu while the itching and pain is neglected. Some people have no symptoms which causes even more problems. The Latent stage has no blisters or sores as this is the stage when virus travels from the skin to the nervous system making the disease far more dangerous. The shedding stage results in proliferation of the virus into the nervous system. In this stage the virus spread in the fluid system of the body like saliva, semen or vaginal fluid showing no symptoms. The recurrence stage is basically the stage when the herpes makes a comeback. The symptoms and pain at this stage isn't that bad like that of the first attack. The reason behind having the recurrence includes stress, tiredness, sickness, menstrual periods, etc. The symptoms of recurrence include itching, tingling or pain in the places where you were first infected.

There is no cure to the disease but medication can offer a great deal of help. Medication not only helps in managing the sores, it enables in the rapid recovery of the sores and prevents them from coming back. Warm water baths are also very effective while cotton cloths provide proper freshness and avoid roughness and rashes. The sores should be kept dry as even little bit of moisture might slow down the healing process. Providing the sores with cool compresses or ice packs may provide a great deal of relief. Medicines like aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen provide relief from the pain and fever. Many a times the effect of herpes becomes weaker and weaker with the passing years.
