Valtrex - What You Should Know About It?

By Sally Gomes on August 20, 2010

The herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes genital herpes. This virus is of two types: HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Most infections of genital herpes are caused by the HSV-2, and HSV-1 generally responsible for fever blisters, which can be passed from one person to another while kissing. You can use dental dams to prevent infections of this kind. HSV-1 is rarely responsible for causing genital herpes through oral sexual contact. There is little difference between the sores caused by either virus. It is spread by direct contact with the infected person, sexual intercourse or oral being the most common methods of transmitting the virus. You can use effective medications such as Valtrex to keep this contagious health condition at bay.

Valtrex

Valtrex, an antiviral drug, works by slowing the growth of the virus responsible for causing shingles, genital herpes, cold sores and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes, but helps in treating it. It lessens the symptoms of the virus and helps in faster recovery. Valtrex can be used for treatment in both children and adults. It should be used, for treatment of cold sores, in children who are at least 12 years old. It may be used for various other purposes, which are not mentioned in the medication guide.

Clinical trials and efficacy

To known the efficacy and performance of this drug, clinical trials were performed on it. It was seen that this drug shortened the healing time of genital herpes. People who took Valtrex recovered 33% faster than those who were given placebos. People taking Valtrex experienced 25% less pain. This drug showed best results when it was taken within the first 24 hours of the herpes outbreak.

FDA approval

Valtrex, a drug used for treatment of genital herpes, is produced by GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved by the FDA in December 1995.

How does it work?

Valtrex stops the replication of the herpes virus in the body. It stops it from reproducing and prevents its spread to other cells in the body. This drug helps in keeping the virus inactive in the body. It also slows down the symptoms of the disease so that the immune system has more time to deal with it. Valtrex contains valacyclovir, a chemical that attacks the herpes virus. The herpes virus contains a small part of the DNA virus, which is injected in the the cell, which is being attacked. Valtrex prevents this from happening. It dissolves in the stomach and enters the bloodstream.
