Shingles are skin rashes usually appear in a group on one side of the body or face. Another name for shingles is herpes zoster named after the virus that causes it varicella zoster virus. People who have a weakened immune system often developed shingles. Elderly individuals who are often stressed out are an easy target for the virus. Fortunately, most individuals who already got the shingles virus and got better will not be infected again.

Shingles are often developed when the chickenpox virus inside a person who already have it becomes active again. A person who got better from chickenpox will not totally get rid of the virus it will just lay dormant inside the nerve roots. In some cases especially to some individuals who have a strong immune system the virus that causes chickenpox will lie dormant forever. There are certain instances where aging, stress, and even a type of disease could trigger the virus to wake up and be active again and thus resulting to shingles. There are also certain medicines that could awaken the virus and caused shingles rash. Health professionals do not have any clear explanation yet as to why this happens but what they do know is that when the dormant virus that causes chickenpox became active again it will not appear or became chickenpox again but rather it would appear as shingles.

An individual cannot get shingles from a person who has shingles except rarely if the person has not had chickenpox at all or even do not have a vaccine for chickenpox.

Symptoms of shingles have stages. It starts as a headache. In some cases a person may feel as if he has flu but do not have or show signs of fever. Then after, it followed by itching and pain in some areas. A rash may appear and later it will develop into blisters. Fluid filled blisters may appear before it crusted over. In some cases it would take 2 to 4 weeks for the blisters to completely heal often times they leave scars when they heal. There are individuals that only develop mild rashes and there is who do not get a rash at all.

Some people may feel weak and dizzy during the signs of shingles. Some develop long term pain or even develop a rash on the face. In some people rash may spread and may affect vision. If this is the case it is recommended to seek medical help right away. There are vitamins and supplements available that could help reduce the symptoms of shingles as well.
