What Are Shingles

What Are Roofing Vents And Why Are They Important?

By Partha Goswami on April 11, 2014

In the opinion of Tagarbejde Holbk, it is the single most important aspect to extend the life of your shingles and reduce ice dams. They are also responsible for reduced utility bills during summer.

Importance of Roof Ventilation

Tagarbejde Holbk lists out the following reasons why roof ventilation is important;

  • Extends the life of the roof
  • Helps to prevent ice dams in frigid conditions
  • Helps to conserve energy required for air conditioning in hotter climates
  • Helps in the conservation of the roof and increases its shelf life by preventing any damage

Moisture Control

In addition to the above mentioned benefits of roof ventilation, it also helps to prevent moisture. The roof structure is protected by roof ventilation as it releases moisture from the attic as well as other spaces which may have accumulated. Extra moisture can cause a lot of issues such as formation of mold and fungi. Furthermore, excess moisture may also lead to rusting and breakage of metal materials. The roof deck may even disintegrate due to the presence of dry rot. Thus it is obvious that roof ventilation is extremely important and should be considered while building or remodeling the house. Tagarbejde Holbk suggests enlisting the help of either a carpenter or a roofing contractor for this purpose.

Roof Ventilation in New and Old Homes

According to Tagarbejde Holbk's opinion, old homes are less in need of roof ventilators as compared to new homes. This is because old homes are less airtight; meaning, they lack proper insulation in the doors and windows of the home and do not have proper vapor barriers. Due to this, there is proper ventilation, even when the doors and windows are closed. On the other hand, newer constructions put higher emphasis on homes being air tight in order to be energy efficient. Therefore you will find in newer constructions there are proper vapor barriers and accurate insulation of doors and windows. Therefore, newer homes are in higher need for roof ventilation.

Roof Ventilating Techniques

There are various ways to add ventilation to your roof. Here are some options suggested by Tagarbejde Holbk;

  • Soffit Vents: For any ventilation mechanism to work efficiently, there needs to be two points. One for the air to enter and the other to exit. Review your house for soffit areas. Soffit vents allow convective air flow.
  • Ridge Vents: This is a ventilation strip which is placed along the house's ridge line. Before its installation, a strip of 1" wide roof decking is cut along the edges of the ridge line which helps in proper air movement.
  • House or Attic Fans: Fans can be placed on the roof to draw out air and put it on the outside; i.e. as an exhaust fan.

Thus, as is clear from the above discussion, roofing vents are extremely important and should be used. Tagarbejde Holbk suggests contacting a roofing contractor or a carpenter for the work.
