Painful blisters and sores are caused by a group of viruses called herpes. Herpes simplex virus causes genital herpes and cold sores around the mouth. Herpes zoster is a different kind of virus, which is responsible for causing chickenpox and shingles.

Many patients experience a lot of illness and stress during their holidays. They see more colds, more flu, more depression and lately more herpes. The number one cause of herpes is stress. Here are some easy-to-follow tips, which can keep away herpes during your holidays:

Sleep enough: You will not get stressed easily if you sleep enough. As you won't have stress, the chances of occurrence of herpes outbreak reduces.

Do not drink excessively: It is understandable that holidays are meant to celebrate and you may indulge in drinking. But excess of anything is bad and drinking excessively will make your sleep less peaceful. This may add to your stress.

Control your diet: The holiday cuisine may look inviting and tempting but it is not good for your waistline. Unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits decreases your immunity level. You should ensure that you eat a balanced diet that nourishes your body by providing it with all the basic nutrients. This will keep you strong. Ensure that you do not eat fatty foods during your holiday season.

Exercise regularly: You may become less regular or completely quit exercising when you are holidaying. This mistake could be very costly to you in terms of health and long term effects. A lot of stress is relieved by physical activity. You should do something that you enjoy doing such as rock climbing, swimming or running. You should note that shopping for the holiday season doesn't count as exercise.

Avoid catching colds: Wash your hands often and stay away from colds as they cause a lot of stress to your body which can be avoided. Stress often triggers an outbreak of herpes.

Stay connected: Recent studies have shown that reconnecting with old friends and connecting with new ones relieves stress. Not only does socializing make you feel better in more ways that one, but it also helps you relieve stress. So what are you waiting for? Start connecting.

Chill down: It is not possible for you to execute each and every plan you make. You should aim at managing and enjoying whatever you can in the time you have rather than cribbing about what you have not explored.

Get some 'me' time: Ensure that you spend some time alone on your holiday. Read a good book, listen to some music, take a hot bath and relax. You may also try yoga to relieve yourself of stress.

Think positive: In spite of having herpes, you should not forget to be thankful and happy about a lot of things. Think positive and keep your spirits high. Try to be happy and everything else will fall into place.

Let your hair down during holidays and enjoy yourself but don't overdo anything and ruin it for yourself by having a herpes outbreak. Holidays are a break from work and daily schedules not from health.
